The Selective Bactericidal Action of Methylene-blue
نویسنده
چکیده
Since the publication of observations on the selective bactericidal action of gentian violet, 1 studies have been carried on in this laboratory with a large number of other dyes. The technique of divided plates, previously described, has been employed. The results with dyes similar in chemical structure to gentian violet have already been reported. 2 These dyes, like gentian violet, were found to prevent the growth of gentian-positive, and to be without effect on gentian-negative organisms. 8 In this communication the selective bactericidal action of a dye unrelated to gentian violet in chemicaI structure, namely, methylene-blue, will be reported. That this dye has bactericidal properties has, of course, long been known. It is to the selective feature that I wish to call attention. Briefly Stated, it has been found that methylene-blue, like gentian violet, is without effect on the growth of Bacillus typhosus and Bacillus coli; but that, unlike gentian violet, it exhibits a selective action when Bacillus subtilis and Micrococcus aureus are planted on divided plates containing it. The contrast between the action of the two dyes is shown in figures I and 2. Figure I is a divided plate containing gentian violet and has been stroked with

Differentiation of Hemolytic Streptococci of Human and of Dairy Origin by Methylene Blue Tolerance and Final Acidity
A grouping of 138 strains of hemolytic streptococci based on differences in dye-sensitiveness and in final hydrogen-ion concentration of cultures is presented. Three groups are distinguished; (1) human parasitic strains, defined by a final pH range of 5.2 to 5.0 and by failure to reduce methylene blue (1:5000) in milk, (2) bovine strains parasitic in the udder, characterized by a final pH range...
متن کاملMethylene Blue Prevents Post-Surgical Adhesion Formation in the Rabbit
Peritoneal adhesions are challenging in abdominal surgery. In spite of different kinds of treatments still no definitive and effective treatment is suggested. To determine the prevention effects of intraperitoneal (ip) methylene blue in post surgical adhesion formation 44 rabbits were randomly divided in two groups of equal number. Group I received an intra peritoneal injection of a 1% suspensi...
متن کاملInvestigation of performance of bimodal/functionalized mesoprorous silica nanoparticles on the adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solution
In this study, bimodal mesoporous silica, i.e. UVM-7, was synthesized and functionalized withsulfonic acid and characterized using XRD, nitrogen physisorption, SEM, TEM and acid/basetitration. The results displayed that bimodal mesopore structure was firmly formed and acidicfunctional groups were grafted on the surface of the UVM-7. The concentration of the acidicfunctional groups was determine...
متن کاملSynthesis of activated carbon/zinc oxide nanocomposite from rapeseed plant waste by green chemistry method, evaluation of its performance in Methylene Blue pigment removal and optimization of influencing parameters using design expert
Background and Objective: Due to the water shortages and the presence of industrial pollutants in water resources, wastewater treatment, especially colored wastewater, is essential. The aim of this study was to treat wastewater containing Methylene Blue dye using activated carbon nanocomposite/zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO/AC) obtained from canola oil waste by green method. Materials and Metho...
متن کاملPhytotoxicity of methylene blue to rice seedlings
Methylene blue is widely used in various industrial branches. Due to insufficient treatment, its occurrence in wastewater is frequently detected, which may result in serious environment problems to aquatic organisms. Hydroponic experiments were conducted with rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L. cv. XZX 45) exposed to methylene blue to determine the effective concentration using relative gr...
